OUTDOOR

THE IDEAL COATING OF FASTENERS FOR OUTDOOR STRUCTURES

Using timber, it is possible to build outdoor structures that meet both functionality and aesthetics. However, the right products are needed: our C4 EVO screws, certified for outdoor use in service class 3 and atmospheric corrosivity class C4, ensure very high performance in terms of resistance to corrosion typical of coastal areas and aggressive environments, while maintaining the mechanical performance of carbon steel.

C4 EVO coating is a multilayer coating composed of an external functional layer of epoxy matrix with aluminium flakes of around 15-20 μm, which gives the coating optimum resistance to mechanical and thermal stresses. The aluminium flakes also serve, when required, as sacrificial cathodes for the metal base of the screw.

FOCUS ON SUBSTRUCTURE

The durability of a timber deck depends not only on the correct choice of the raw material, but also on the attention to construction details. In general, direct contact of the timber with the substrate should always be avoided, just as it is essential to interpose some distance between boards and battens, in order to ensure ventilation and prevent the risk of water stagnation and the consequent rapid deterioration of the deck. It is therefore essential to use suitable connectors, which allow the structure to follow the natural movements of the timber. The choice of the type of fastener then depends on the type of aesthetic result required and the type of processing preferred.

THE VISIBLE FASTENER

Timber cladding is appropriate for any environment: the variety of wood species makes it possible to meet all design and aesthetic requirements. The Rothoblaas complete array of screws offers appropriate solutions for various combinations of materials and densities, according to the wood species. The choice of connector material and its coating depends on the static requirements and aggressiveness of the environment: the best compromise between mechanical strength and corrosion resistance has to be found. Good corrosion resistance is an indispensable requirement for elements used in service class 3 (exterior environments) to last over time. This is optimised through appropriate techniques that make it possible to avoid static and/or aesthetic problems and the consequent maintenance.

THE INVISIBLE FASTENER

The cladding boards can be fastened to the structure in a concealed way either between the board joints, thanks to the presence of the groove, or under the board. Rothoblaas solutions are designed to ensure correct and constant micro-ventilation. They ensure versatility of use, quick assembly and precision due to the mounting stop, and easy installation even when using boards with variable groove thickness and position. The terraces and claddings built in this way ensure aesthetically pleasing performance even for structures with articulated geometry, as well as high durability of the construction due to the high mechanical strengths of the fasteners.

With our spreadsheet you can quickly perform calculations of all the components required for the construction of a rectangular or "L"-shaped terrace: supports, substructure, fasteners and connectors for the boards.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESISTANCE TO EXTERNAL AGENTS

Contemporary architectural trends often include ventilated façades with open joints, timber or technical material cladding, requiring the use of membranes with long ultraviolet resistance characteristics. Rothoblaas waterproofing solutions installed on the exterior side of open ventilated façades protect the insulation layer from weather conditions and provide a contrasting black background to the architectural cladding elements. Proper application involves combination with UV-resistant tapes and accessories. In addition, Rothoblaas solutions undergo rigorous testing to ensure the highest quality standards and maximum effectiveness, and many of them, such as some membranes, tapes and sealants have excellent fire resistance.
