Seaside Resort
Building in timber, practically inside the sea, means taking on corrosion and humidity – a challenge requiring very specific solutions in order to be overcome. Even in an earthly paradise like the Innafushi atoll in the Maldives.
Although not particularly large, the structures need to withstand the salty air, humidity and water carried by the waves and wind. One of the biggest problems is corrosion, given the constant exposure to salt and humidity. Traditional ferrous metals are known for being especially vulnerable, but in this case, SCI HCR (High Corrosion Resistant) screws in super-austenitic stainless steel were chosen for their superior resistance to corrosion, key to ensuring the longevity of the resort's structures. Specifically designed for marine and industrial environments, these screws proved indispensable when it came to fastening the elements exposed to seawater. Rated in the highest corrosion resistance class according to EN 1993-1-1:2006/A1:2015 (CRC V), they are ideal for use in environments with the highest atmospheric corrosion (C5) and the most acidic timbers (T5).
Humidity poses another critical challenge in the Maldives. One that was addressed by opting for TRASPIR and VAPOR membranes. The former, applied to the exterior of the envelope, guarantee wind-tightness and protection against water (rain, but also seawater carried by the waves and wind), while also ensuring vapour permeability from the inside out. The latter, on the other hand, applied on the inner side of the envelope, serve to control vapour, regulating indoor humidity levels to ensure optimal comfort for guests.
Lastly, the FLEXI BAND and TERRA BAND tapes were instrumental in ensuring all joints and corners of the buildings were completely sealed and protected against humidity and water, preventing infiltrations and ensuring the structures’ lasting resistance to external elements.
The construction of the Innafushi resort is a perfect example of how modern technology can ensure the durability of structures made of natural materials, even in the most aggressive conditions.
